Class 6(a) Henry Jenner Cup There have been a good number of entries for the Gorsedd Competitions this year - the 76th Anniversary of the founding of Gorseth Kernow - with innumerable enquiries for brochures from the Gorsedd website gorsethkernow.org.uk, the result being a considerable increase in entries from abroad. Adult entries have increased this year and it has been very rewarding to see entries from Cornish Schools - of which some have excelled themselves - and supported the competitions wholeheartedly, particularly, Heamoor Community Primary Junior school, Penzance, who have won 'The Legonna Prize' for the highest number of quality entries. Pensilva, Cape Cornwall, Flushing and Carclaze Schools were all equally as enthusiastic with their entries. Painting, Poetry and Short stories are always popular with the school entries. The Winners for the 'English Verse' Classes are as follows, 12-18yrs Gideon Beresford, Cape Cornwall School, 10 -11yrs Ashleigh White and under 10yrs Abbie Hoole-Jackson both from Heamoor C.P. School. Abi Redman Heamoor C.P.School won the 'Detailed Study of a Cornish Subject' 11yrs and under with Kitt Thornton Cape Cornwall School gaining First for 'A Short Story Set In Cornwall' 12-18yrs and Merryn Davies Deacon, Redruth and Sam Hodge, Truro Sharing First Prize in the 11yrs and under class. Jessy King Cape Cornwall School gained a first for 'Photography' and Nicoya Champion Heamoor C.P. School won the 'Painting In Any medium' class. The Cornish Language entries for Prose and Verse were of a high standard with the Award of the 'Mordon-Carador Rosebowl' going to Tony Hak who is a bard (Karer An Yeth) 'The Cornish Crystal' is awarded to Philip Chadwick London and Neil kennedy won the 'Tioges Trophy' for his Cornish prose entry in Kernewek Dewedhes. 'A Song In Cornish' gained first place for Nigel Roberts Saltash, Edwina Dorman London, won the class 'A Short Story For Beginners In Cornish' and Mrs. Wilhelmina Dresser is awarded First and 'The Henry Jenner Cup' for a 'Cornish Essay in Cornish' with Mary Jones winning the ' Cornish Essay' written in English. Mrs. E. M. Mavor, St. Agnes gained first with her 'Short Story Set In Cornwall'. Cornish Dialect prose and verse was of a very high Standard commented the judge, who was impressed with the number of entries but is always delighted to receive more. Mary Quick from Carbis Bay, won the Dialect Prose and Ben Batten the Verse. The poetry classes, again received a high number of entries, Pennyanne Windsor won the 'English Verse' class. Judith Trevorrow, Camborne gained first with 'English Verse by a Cornish Poet'. 'Song in English about Cornwall' gained first place for Carol-Ann Cook, Bude. William Morris has been awarded first place with another outstanding piece of calligraphy. Alicia Martin Seworgan, won both the 'Photography Group' and 'Single Photo' class with some sharp and well presented pictures of 'Pebbles On The Beach' and 'As The Sun Goes Down'. 'Old As The Hills', painted by Maureen Hegarty gained first prize out of the 22 watercolour entries and Anne Pascoe, won first prize with 'Coast At West Penwith', in 'The Any Other Medium' class, in which there were 17entries. Next year's Competition Brochures will be available from the beginning of September and all classes will close on March 31st 2005.
