Launched at St Ives on the eve of the 2010 Gorsedd, this A4 book is a collection of short biographies of fifty-two past St Ives bards, together with their contribution to Gorsedh Kernow, the life of St Ives and Cornish culture and history. As well as bards such as Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach and Peter Lanyon, who achieved fame on the wider British stage and internationally, it looks at grass roots citizens such as Beryl James, Cyril Noall and John Tucker Barber. Well illustrated with over forty black and white photographs, it was researched and compiled jointly by St Ives Archive Study Centre and Gorsedh Kernow Archives and Publications Committee.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Gorsedh Kernow and sees the publication of a booklet which looks at the organisation from the inside. As well as charting its origins in early Britain and Wales, Rod Lyon (Tewennow) looks at its ceremonies and regalia and explores the impact of key figures such as Henry Jenner and Robert Morton Nance. He explains, too, how Gorsedh Kernow has changed over the years and how it sees its role in 21st-century Cornwall and across the Cornish diaspora. Lavishly illustrated in full colour with many previously unseen photographs, "Gorseth Kernow/The Cornish Gorsedd" also contains explanatory notes about Gorsedd regalia and handy lists of Grand Bards, Deputy Grand Bards and Gorsedd sites. |
This collection of essays and original texts celebrates the life and work of Robert Morton Nance, artist, folklorist, writer, maritime historian, Celtic enthusiast, founder of the Old Cornwall Societies and Grand Bard of the Cornish Gorsedd. Henry & Katharine Jenner:
|
Henry & Katharine Lee Jenner in 1881 |
This important book marks the centenary of Henry Jenner's publication of The Handbook of the Cornish Language which initiated the modern study of Cornish. In the same year, 1904, through Jenner's efforts, Cornwall was admitted as one of the six Celtic Nations at the Pan-Celtic Festival in Caernarfon, Wales. This new book, a collection of essays by many present day Cornish writers on Henry and Katharine, his wife, with examples of their writings and numerous photographs, is also a milestone. It is the first detailed study of these these important figures in the Cornish revival in the twentieth century, putting their beliefs and achievements into the wider context of Victorian and Edwardian society. |
Edited by Derek Williams, (Map Jethan), it is published by Francis Boutle Ltd, with sponsorship from Gorsedh Kernow at £10.00 (special offer) which includes postage. Please make cheques payable to Gorsedh Kernow.
